Material Notification Shade is an application that uses gesture-detection to overlay the generic notification shade with a more configurable one. This app doesn’t actually override any parts of the original notification shade implementation so the original is still there—just hidden underneath this app.
The application utilizes a notification listener service which lets the app intercept existing notifications and present them to you with the customization options that you applied. For instance, you can apply custom notification shade animations such as ones based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The notification listener service is also how much of the original notification gestures like swipe-to-dismiss stay intact when using Material Notification Shade.
If your device has root access, then Material Notification Shade can have greater access to replicating the original quick settings tiles on your device. Tiles like airplane mode or location can’t directly toggle these features without root, though the application does open up to the settings page where you can easily manually toggle things.
Notification Cards
When it comes to the notification cards, there are three themes one can choose from—a “Light” theme, a “Colored” theme, and a “Dark” theme. The “Light” notification card theme is just the stock notification card theme. The “Colored” theme uses the accent color of the application the notification is for in order to set a colored background for the notification card. The “Dark” notification card theme blends all the notifications with a black background—great for AMOLED screens.
