Windows 10 Mobile is dead, Windows 10 for Mobile (Andromeda) alive

Microsoft finally made it clear that “Windows 10 Mobile as we know it” is dead or as one can mildly put it terminally ill and on ventilator(Bug fixes & improvements) support. But not all hope is lost if you are a hard-core Microsoft fan. In fact, one can notice that we mentioned “Windows 10 Mobile as we know it” is dead and it may bring a bit of solace to know that Windows 10 for Mobile lives and is under development.

Microsoft is already working to bring Windows 10 to Mobile in form of Andromeda or Windows 10 on ARM with cShell, a modular reincarnation of Windows 10. This model is not new and Microsoft always strived to do so along with even Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 by trying to get UWP apps and merging a part of the code base as Windows OneCore.

But with Andromeda what Microsoft wants to achieve is that full Windows 10 kernel and code base along with UWP apps can be available on upcoming Mobile phones. The handling of adjustment to the mobile form-factor will be achieved with the help of CShell. This Windows 10 for Mobile project is internally referred as Andromeda that also involves prototype Surface Mobile hardware in works. You can read more about Andromeda here.

Coming to the timelines, as per our sources, we can look forward to the second half of 2018 for some major announcements in this regard by Microsoft. But one thing we need to keep in mind that this Windows 10 for Mobile will not be compatible with the devices that we use now. There is no upgrade path for any of them.

We also exclusively reported that 2018 may see Surface Mobile (Surface Phone) & Windows mobile devices from top vendors too. We still believe this is the case and Microsoft is in touch with its top Windows vendors for the next “refresh” of Windows in Mobile.

We earlier reported about Surface Mobile Devices “Surface Peking & Surface Slavonia” leak in an official video description in China. So, may be we will have two slightly different designs for both Surface Peking & Surface Slavonia.

Windows 10 Andromeda Platform will power the upcoming Surface Mobile devices

Andromeda, Composable Shell and Windows 10 on ARM have been the most popular 2017 buzzwords doing rounds in Microsoft and Windows Tech circles. Now, with leaks coming thick and fast the idea around Microsoft’s upcoming Mobile hardware and the software powering it has starting taking shape.

Andromeda Platform:

Andromeda platform may be the most important and innovative part of Windows 10 on ARM + Composable Shell, that may power new form-factors like folding, multi-screen mobile devices. It can support a variety of gestures and postures. It will be capable of making use of Snapdragon 835 and other upcoming high-end ARM processors.

Andromeda was also revealed in code-digging of the latest Windows 10 insider builds.

We have reported about a Microsoft Hinged device patent that shows a Foldable device with two displays, that can be folded across a hinge to look and work like a handheld device. These are the kind of devices Andromeda platform may support with the help of Composable Shell.

We reported about the leak of Surface Mobile devices Surface Peking and Surface Slavonia in an official video description. These mobile devices offer a hinge angle support of up to 185 degrees and also from description looks like capable of supporting handheld / Tablet / Desktop use.

Composable Shell Windows 10 Mobile UI has recently leaked in a video and it shows how Windows 10 will adapt to any form-factor wih help of the Composable shell. Microsoft has been working on “OneCore convergence” and we may hear more about it very soon.

It is no surprise that Microsoft has been working on a new mobile form-factor targeted mainly at Enterprise. We have heard about a Phone in works at Microsoft that will not look like phones that we see around now.

Official: Windows 10 Mobile is DEAD

While it is well understood that Windows 10 Mobile as a platform has no future as Microsoft has all but refused to develop it further. But Microsoft has not admitted this officially either by refusing to comment or by throwing some PR jargons here and there.

But now it comes from none other than Joe Belfiore that Microsoft has already given in and has accepted the ultimate defeat of its Mobile platform.

There will be no new features and hardware for Windows 10 Mobile. All Windows 10 Mobile users can hope for now are only bug fixes and security updates.

This is still not the complete picture though as Microsoft is already working on new first-party mobile hardware that will be powered by the Andromeda or Windows 10 on ARM with CShell. You can read more about Andromeda here.
